Rep. McNerney Response to President Biden’s State of the Union

Press Release

Congressman Jerry McNerney

Washington, DC – In response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) issued the following statement:

“Tonight, President Biden recommitted to building a better America. During his first year of leadership, he has already helped to make significant progress with the enactment of two landmark pieces of legislation. The American Rescue Plan has been instrumental in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan will transform our nation’s infrastructure while creating millions of jobs and economic opportunities.

Even though we are experiencing the strongest economic growth in nearly 40 years, many Americans are still struggling with cost increases. Inflation due to disruption in the global supply chain has renewed the demand for a strong American manufacturing industry, and I stand with the President in his call to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act and support this critical investment in American manufacturing. I also commend his pledge to buy American-made products to ensure that the federal government is prioritizing American businesses and American workers.

But our commitment to supporting Americans’ prosperity does not end there. Tonight, President Biden outlined a plan to build a better America for workers by raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour; for families through an extension of the Child Tax Credit, which has already reduced child hunger and increased families’ potential for upward mobility; and for veterans suffering from illness due to toxic exposure while serving. We will also create a better America by preparing to combat the challenges of climate change through investments in increased clean energy production and energy efficiency.

While we have much to do here at home, we must still remain vigilant in our role as global leaders in the fight against tyranny. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine must be met head on. President Biden has taken action to cut off Russia’s financial resources, including tonight’s announcement that we will be closing off American airspace to all Russian flights. The threat of creeping autocracy does not end at the Ukrainian border – it is a threat to democratic nations everywhere.

The past few years have tested the strength and character of our country, and we still have many challenges ahead. The road to building a better America is paved by the American people, and that’s an investment you can always count on.”

Did anyone else expect to see a Democratic politician’s response to Biden’s State of the Union Address to be anything but in lock step with their party?? I’m mean really… that would be like expecting the CEO of GM to do a commercial on buying a Ford.
