 Here is a look at this weekends events in East Contra Costa County as we approach Veterans Day on Wednesday.

The 2015 Official Striper Tournament will continue on November 7. Dan’s Delta Outdoors Striper series is a catch-and-release tournament.

November 7: Antioch Police Neighborhood Cleanup

The Antioch Police Department is excited to announce the 65th installment of the Neighborhood Cleanup Program. This event will occur on Saturday, November 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobsen Park on Jacobsen Street.

IMG_9642This is a collaborative community effort which involves active participation from The Antioch Police Department Crime Prevention Commission; Neighborhood Watch Program; Volunteers in Police Service; community volunteers and the Public Works Department.

The City of Antioch Neighborhood Cleanup program is not just for residential neighborhoods. It is a program that will change venues on a monthly basis and it will include business and commercial areas as well. Neighborhoods that are free of trash and refuse are inviting, and a clean community instills a sense of community pride.

Volunteers will receive instructions and the equipment necessary to accomplish the goal. The targeted area is within walking distance. Excluding inclement weather, future Neighborhood Cleanup events are scheduled for the first Saturday of every month and the locations will be announced in advance.

The Brentwood Farmers’ Market on is open on Saturday from 8am to 12pm, Oak St. and First St.  New this year – they have expanded around the corner onto Oak St.

The season will run from March 7, 2015 to November 21, 2015.

Antioch-Day-of-the-DeadNov. 7: Antioch’s Day of the Dead Exhibit
The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch is proud to collaborate with Give Always to Others & Company (GATO) to present their annual observance of the Day of the Dead, an ancient tradition of indigenous people of  Mexico and other parts of the world of honoring and remembering those who have departed.

The free Day of the Dead exhibit, “Reunited Once Again/ Reunidos de Nuevo”, at the Lynn House Gallery, will open Saturday, October 24th and continues through November 7th on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1-4 PM.

The Lynn House Gallery is located at 809 West First Street, in downtown Antioch, across from the AMTRAK Station. The exhibit is sponsored by Give Always to Others & Company, Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch and a grant from Keller Canyon Grant from CCC District V Supervisor Federal Glover.

McBethNov. 7: Drama Factory Presents MACBETH

Formed in the late 1970s, the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra has established a presence throughout the county.  The orchestra is comprised of forty-five musicians ranging in age from 15 to 94 who are music teachers, accountants, students, electricians, mechanics, homemakers, lawyers, retirees, dentists, engineers and computer specialists. Primarily Contra Costa residents, their only remuneration is the stimulation and satisfaction of rehearsing and performing together.  In addition to the five-concert season at the Lesher Center, the orchestra also nurtures its dedication to the community by providing affordable performances to the residents of East Contra Costa County at El Campanil Theatre.

Delta Tactical Training Group 14November 8: Basic Handgun Training Course

Delta Tactical Training Group announced a series of upcoming beginner handgun training courses starting this Saturday and will run through January. This class is designed to help civilians become more familiar with firearms. Classes are $120 + $10 range fee.

Please Join the City of Antioch and local volunteers in honoring our veteran, with a grand “Welcome Home”, at Antioch’s 2015 Veteran’s Day Ceremonies and Parade!

The Celebration begins with the Arrival and Landing of a Huey Helicopter @ 9:30 a.m. followed by the ceremonies with special guest speakers at the Veteran’s Memorial at the foot of “L” Street.

A Parade with Floats, Military Vehicles and Equipment, Veterans, Bands, and Classic Cars begins @ 11:00 AM at the Marina and will head east down 2nd Street.

November 11: Oakley Veterans Day

IMG_5028Oakley to Pay Tribute to Veterans The City of Oakley will hold its 4th Annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony on
Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at the Civic Center Park, 3231 Main Street beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Oakley’s program will include the Presentation of Colors, student essays, rifle salute and taps. This year’s program will also see the addition of live music performed by the Freedom High School marching band.

Arrive early to the site of the Veterans Memorial for a pre‐program performance that will begin at 10:30 a.m.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Major General Daniel E. Helix. Major General Helix earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at UC Berkeley in 1983.

Upon entering active duty, he was assigned to the 1st Armored Division as a Field Artilleryman in the Federal Republic of Germany. In this capacity he served as Fire Support Chief, Fire Direction Officer, and as Executive and Personnel Officer. Major General Helix served two tours stateside as a Company Commander during Desert Storm and also served as the Battalion Logistics Officer and Senior Controller for the 91st Division Maneuver Training Command. Now, Helix now serves as the Executive Director of the United States Volunteers – America (USVA). As the Executive Director for USVA, Major General Helix is responsible for the national organization’s day‐to‐day operations covering 14 states. Veterans Day is a federal holiday honoring all armed service veterans.

This day also commemorates the 1918 signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I between Germany and the Allied nations.

November 14: The Liberty High Jazz Ensemble Supports Eagle Scout Project
Liberty-JazzThis night of Jazz is in support of Hayden Romiti’s Eagle Scout Project where he made a self-serve coffee station for Brentwood Neighborhood Church’s courtyard which is called “The Gathering Place”. This is a place that people can go and unwind, talk and drink free coffee anytime the church is open.

Hook-line-2November 15: Hook Line & Sinker Bass Tournament Series

The Hook, Line & Sinker bass tournament circuit is a low cost circuit for the amateur angler. The entry fee of $70 per team includes cash awards for the top 7 teams, plaques for the top 5 teams in each tournament and a hot dog BBQ after each tournament.

At each tournament we also have a young angler raffle for our participants age 16 and under. A portion of the entry fee is also used to host the Tournament of Champions and tri-trip BBQ for the anglers at the end of each year. This is a great place to start if you want to fish professional tournaments or if you just want to have fun!

On November 26, you are invited to join the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot for Schools. This 5K/10K event benefits the Brentwood Union School District and Liberty Union High School District athletic programs.

Last year, more than 600 people participated in the event which is aimed at promoting health, athletics, and education.

Holliday LightsDecember 6: Tree of Lights 2015
Hospice East Bay invites the public to participate in the 29th Annual Tree of Lights ceremonies that are held in Contra Costa County throughout November and December.

The ceremonies provide a way for community members to honor the lives of their friends and loved ones. Everyone is invited to participate in the events which include music, poetry, remembrances by family members and hospice staff, and the special moment when the trees light up.

By dedicating a Memorial Light for a minimum gift of $25, you can honor someone you love while directly supporting end-of-life patient care. Memorial donors of $100 and higher will have the option to have their names listed in the lighting ceremony program of their choice. Event sponsorships start at $250.

Funds raised allow Hospice East Bay to provide essential programs and services such as the Vigil Program which ensures no one has to die alone, the Bridge Program for grieving children and adolescents and Bruns House, our inpatient hospice facility in Alamo.

December 12:  Wreaths Across America 2015
For the first time the Union Cemetery in Brentwood will be participating in Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony on Saturday, December 12 at 9AM.

This ceremony is coordinated by Anne Loucks Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution with support of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 10789 and the Union Cemetery.  The event is open to the public.  We hope to be able to place wreaths on all 300 veterans’ graves.  Wreaths are ordered from Wreaths Across America located in Maine and are delivered the day before the ceremony.  We are reaching out to the community to purchase a wreath(s) to donate.

Anne Loucks Chapter, NSDAR and VFW Post 10789 are participating as fundraising groups (all funds will be used for purchasing wreaths).  Wreaths can be purchased directly through wreathsacrossamerica.org and VFW Post 10789 (www.vfw10789.org), Commander Steve Todd (415) 722-0923.  You can also contact location coordinator Diane McLean at (925) 858-9075 for more information.
