Walnut Creek, CA – Meals on Wheels Diablo Region (MOWDR) announced Tuesday that they have an immediate need for volunteer drivers to deliver meals in far East Contra Costa County, including the cities of Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Discovery Bay, Brentwood, Oakley and Byron.
There are 20 routes in these cities that need to be filled immediately, and both regular and relief drivers are needed. Potentially, hundreds of seniors will be impacted if these meal delivery volunteer positions remain vacant. For some homebound seniors a meal delivery from MOWDR is the only meal and human contact that they might have on a given day, so the urgency of the situation cannot be understated.
Deliveries are made between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM, Monday through Friday. A typical delivery route takes about 2 hours to complete and covers approximately 15 senior homes.
Meals are picked up between 10:00 – 10:30 AM at designated locations in East County and empty containers are returned to the same location upon completion of the route. There is also an Adopt-A-Route program which allows groups to deliver to local seniors through a rotation-based schedule – perfect for small businesses, churches, and service organizations to give back to those in need in their community.
All MOWDR volunteers go through a screening and orientation process. Regular and relief drivers are required to be licensed with a clean driving record for the past 3 years and carry automobile insurance. Other requirements include a cleared background check and the ability to lift 25 pounds and get in and out of the car up to 15 times on their route.

Sounds like they need to start paying people to do this, as no one wants to volunteer to be shot taking food to poeples door.
Volunteering is something that a lot of people should be doing, even if it’s just an hour or two a week.
I am a retired firefighter and I do Meals on Wheels once a week and thoroughly enjoy it. Its the seniors I serve that enjoy the quick visit a whole lot more than I. This is because, for the most part that, I may be the only person that they’ll converse with for a few minutes that day. In addition I volunteer tutoring kids after school at a community center.
People should realize that they do indeed want to help others and can do so simply by giving an hour or two a week. Trust me, you’ll feel good about it.
By the way, just for the record, I have never heard of a Meals on Wheels volunteer ever having any difficulties while delivering meals at 10:30 in the morning.
