Lyft’s Rideshare Suspension in California

by ECT

Lyft announced  that as a result of a court order, they be suspending rideshare throughout California at 11:59 PM PT on Thursday, August 20.

The move comes after Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) was implemented which required companies like Lyft to classify workers as employees and not independent contractors.

They said based on the ruling, it wasn’t possible to overhaul their business model and operation in 10-days. They say an overwhelming majority of drivers don’t want them to make these changes either, because they would fundamentally alter how rideshare works, who is able to drive, and when.

For drivers, they say based on their feedback the new model doesn’t work for 4 out of every 5 drivers.

For those still looking to get around using Lyft, they are still offering Lyft Bikes, Lyft Scooters, and Lyft Rentals. They also encourage people to utilize public transportation.

Per Lyft, learn more about why this is happening and what you can do about it.
