Legislature to Consider Kiley-Jones Amendment to Open Schools Now

SACRAMENTO – On Thursday, Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) plans to introduce a floor amendment to Senate Bill 86 (Budget). If AB 86 is considered instead, Senator Brian Jones (R-Santee) will offer the amendment in the Senate. The Kiley-Jones Amendment would assure every student in California the option of 5-day in-person instruction within 15 days.

“After months of closed-door negotiations, the Governor and Legislative leaders ‘struck a deal’ on schools that does not assure in-person instruction at all,” Kiley said. “We must immediately bring the harm done to our students to an end by following the science and opening classrooms.”

California is one of only five states in the entire nation that currently has a school closure order of any kind. A recent analysis also ranked California 49 out of 50 states in the proportion of in-person instruction being offered to students.

“Under the Newsom/Democrat plan not one school in California is required to reopen,” stated Senator Jones. “They basically just throw money at the problem, walk away, and claim victory. However, our amendment will actually do what most other states are doing – requiring schools to actually reopen and provide in-person education. One year lost in a child’s education is already too much; let’s get them back in class now.”

In a recent study put out by the CDC, the Journal of the American Medical Association found that schools are not only safe, they are one of the safest places for staff and students to be in the entire community.

“For the past 8 months, our kids have been used as bargaining chips to negotiate more funding. SB 86 pays the ransom without any guarantee kids will see the inside of a classroom,” said Jonathan Zachreson, Founder of Reopen California Schools. “We support an amendment to SB 86 that would guarantee the option for kids to get real, substantial in-person education instead of relying on hope and broken promises.”

I don’t usually favor the showboating Assemblyman Kiley, but his assessment of the Democrats’ “school deal” is spot on. What a joke. The real problem is that California’s Democratic politicians are either in the pockets of – or too scared of – the public employee unions to stand up to them.
