Five New Cases of Novel Coronavirus Hit Contra Costa County

Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has confirmed five new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in residents of the county.

Four are being treated at hospitals in Contra Costa. They had no travel history outside the U.S. or known contact with a confirmed case. The fifth patient, who had close contact with another person who previously tested positive for COVID-19, is isolating at home under the guidance of CCHS.

As of Sunday morning, Contra Costa has nine confirmed cases of novel coronavirus. One patient who tested positive last week remains in a local hospital, while three other previously identified patients who tested positive are also isolating at home. CCHS will not release further details about the patients to protect their medical privacy, including the names of the hospitals where they are being treated.

“The coronavirus is here in our community. As we ramp up our testing, we expect to identify more cases. But there is still a lot we can do to slow down the spread and protect our most vulnerable,” said Dr. Ori Tzvieli, acting Contra Costa Health Officer.

Last week, CCHS released recommendations for people who are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19. Practicing good public health hygiene remains the best way of avoiding any respiratory disease, including novel coronavirus:

  • People who are sick should stay home from work or school until they are well
  • Older adults and people with chronic conditions should avoid large gatherings, as they are at higher risk of becoming infected
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available
  • People who are sick should cover their coughs and sneezes using a tissue or their elbow
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your unwashed hands
  • Masks are for sick people. There is no evidence that wearing masks in public prevents healthy people from getting sick with novel coronavirus

The County said last week that they anticipated more cases of COVID-19 in Contra Costa County and  Anna Roth, Health Services Director, and Chris Farnitano, Health officer,  said their focus is shifting from actions to contain COVID-19 to preparing for a sustained response, including future measures to limit and slow the spread of the disease into the community. Children are the least at-risk group unless they have congenital, immunodeficiencies, or respiratory issues.

What pisses me off is that because of HIPA, or whatever, they won’t tell is where these people live. If my neighbor has this virus I want to know so that I can take precautions for my family, and maybe hold my family out of public to PROTECT the public. This crap that happened up near SAC with the street quarantine is BS. Let’s not be reactive. We need to be proactive. I WANT to know if there’s a hazard in my area. They keep us in the dark until they lock everyone down. What happens if I’m at work and they lock my neighborhood down? How do I get to my home or family? Do we even have rights at this point?

I agree with you 100% I don’t know how you feel about those people on the cruise ship though? I feel like they took a cruise with the risk of that happening so deal with the shitty hand you were dealt. There is one lady on the cruise that said she packed extra clothes in case that it would happen.

Don’t panic. There will be no neighborhood lock downs, that is ridiculous. To be pro-active is right, but every individual needs to be pro-active. The government cannot protect you, you need to protect yourself and others. It’s very easy, just stay away from coughing people. And people with cough need to stay out of public. I think every school has send guidelines to parents already. And, wash your hands!

Consider that it’s right next door and take precautions, practice hand washing and sanitizing when no water. People need to stop freaking out.

Lady, get a grip. You sound so ridiculous. Just worry about keeping you and your family safe. Knowing who or where the individuals live will not protect you or anyone else.

The virus is already out, so get plenty of rest, eat right and if you feel sick stay the fuck home.

Quit freaking out people …. wash your hands, keep yourself rested and eat right. If you feel sick, STAY HOME. They are not going to “lockdown” neighborhoods, you sound like an idiot.
