The United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County Local 1230 announced Friday that Camouflage t-shirts are now available for sale with proceeds going to help local veteran groups in the county.
The idea for the shirts came from a local firefighter who brought the idea forward after seeing other agencies across the country implement similar shirts to show support for veterans and though Contra Costa County should do the same.
Neema Mohammadizad, Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County Local 1230, stated the idea was a no-brainer admitting he has never seen quicker approvals across the county.
“To be able to get every chief, every operations chief to say yes we are in across six agencies is huge. I don’t think we have had a united front like this on a charity campaign in our history. So to be able to say across all of Contra Costa we are going to move forward and help our veterans on a united front, it’s huge,” said Mohammadizad
Each agency will have it’s own version of the camouflage shirt which took several months to get the designs right. Local 1230 firefighters will be wearing them to show support on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, July 4th and other days. The general public can also purchase them to show support and help us raise funds.
“It was a great idea and we went with it by developing a couple prototype shirts which got buy in from all six agencies across Contra Costa County as a united front,” said Mohammadizad. “Local 1230 moved forward to raise money for our local veterans which we feel is a great cause.”
All agencies including East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District, Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District, El Ceritto Fire, Pinole Fire, and Kensington Fire will be wearing their respective shirts on various holidays in show of support..
Local 1230 is, and always will be a huge supporter of our Veterans both locally and across our country.
“As a veteran and being from a family of veteran’s, including my daughter who is a SSGT in the USAF currently serving in Korea, I am proud to be a part of this endeavor. As firefighters we are on the frontlines of protecting our communities. It is an honor to show support to those who have our back and protect our borders and beyond and to assure them their service is not forgotten,” says Vince Wells, President of the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County, Local 1230
Mohammadizad agreed.
“The fire service has always been a supporter of our local veterans so it’s important to us that we were united in the idea. Throughout every agency, we do have veterans working in the fire departments working to protect the community. It’s an awesome deal and we couldn’t be happier to do this,” explained Mohammadizad. “Veterans hold a special place in all firefighter hearts and to be able to support them is extremely worthwhile and rewarding.”
Local 1230 currently has a veterans committee within the six agencies who will vet local groups and quarterly decide where funds will be distributed. The funds will stay local and help veterans of Contra Costa County.
In the future, newer versions will be released to keep the look fresh and kids versions of the shirts will be released soon as well as hats.
