by ECT

SACRAMENTO– The Department of Water Resources (DWR), the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire) and the “Catch a Special Thrill” C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation will sponsor an event Saturday, May 30, at Brannan Island State Recreation Area in Sacramento County.

C.A.S.T. for Kids events offer disabled children and young adults a day of outdoor adventure. Thirty children will receive their own fishing rod, reel and tackle box before heading out to enjoy fishing with top anglers. They’ll also learn about boating safety and the preservation of California’s water resources.

Jay Yelas, President of the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, will share his fishing secrets with the kids. Yelas is the 14-time Fishing League Worldwide Champion, with angler winnings of over one million dollars.

The event kicks off with fishing on the Delta from 8 a.m. to 11:30.  A  BBQ luncheon and awards ceremony will wrap up the day.

Participants will be from surrounding public and private schools and are referred by local organizations, including Tri-Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), Easter Seals and other local SELPA organizations.

Local sponsors include American Land & Leisure, California Conservation Corps, Kiwanis International, Kelly-Moore Paints, Sierra Slammers, Starbucks Coffee, Steiner Prints and Bass Pro Shops. State Assembly member Jim Frazier, from District 11, will also make a special appearance at this year’s event.

The C.A.S.T. program expands opportunities for youth with special needs to use and enjoy public land and water throughout State Water Project recreation facilities.
