This morning at about 3:24am, Contra Costa CHP received a call of a collision on I-680 southbound at El Pintado Road in Danville this morning. The crash involved a 2 axle box truck that struck a vehicle and overturned across the freeway, spilling its contents across the roadway.
Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, the box truck (a US Postal Service vehicle carrying packages) had struck an abandoned Ford minivan on the right shoulder, overturned and struck a large metal pole, leaving the male driver (26 years old from Sacramento) trapped inside the cab. Once emergency personnel extricated the driver, he was transported to a local hospital in Walnut Creek but succumbed to his injuries.
In the initial investigation, it appears the male driver allowed the truck to veer to the right and collide with the abandoned minivan parked within the right shoulder.
At this time it is unclear why the driver allowed his box truck to veer into the right shoulder.
Packages in transport were spilled all over the roadway and the company that owns the truck is currently in the process of loading all packages into another truck for transport. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
At this time, traffic on I-680 southbound is still backed up into Walnut Creek and using an alternate route is suggested. The right lane is also still closed at El Pintado Road for the package collection and clean up.
