Contra Costa Water District Release Lead and Copper Testing Results

by ECT

Concord: Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) recently completed its triennial testing for lead and copper as required by federal regulations.  Consistent with previous years, all results came back well below regulations.

Lead and copper are two potential elements that can find their way into our drinking water through exposure to pipes, solder and fixtures that have lead and/or copper components.  Issues with lead nationwide have been in the news recently and residents should be aware of local conditions and what water agencies are doing to monitor for these issues.

Every three years, CCWD is required to complete testing for lead and copper in its treated water system. Timing and locations of the testing are based on federal regulations administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It is important to note that lead is not present in the pipes that move water around the community and CCWD’s water quality team is constantly monitoring and managing water in the system to prevent corrosion.

For CCWD, regulations required at least 50 residents to participate in the testing to determine what levels of lead and copper are in the drinking water at their home.  Residents are selected based on when the home was constructed as past plumbing codes did allow for lead based solder and fixtures. Results from 64 homes all came in below current regulations.  CCWD has provided information about how to reduce exposure to lead to all residents that participated in the program.

CCWD is also proactively working with local public and private schools and day care facilities to implement best management practices focused on minimizing possibility of exposure at those facilities.
