Congressman McNerney Announces 2015 Congressional Art Competition

Stockton, California-  Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced the launch of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for high school students of the Ninth District. The competition is part of a nationwide annual Congressional Art Competition intended to showcase the artistic talents and abilities of students all across the country.

“I look forward to hosting the art competition each year,” said Rep. McNerney.  “We’ve got some very talented young artists in our community and I’m glad to help showcase their artwork to the whole country.”

A panel of judges will select the winning entries and their decision will be announced at a special ceremony and exhibit.  The grand prize winner from the district will be flown to Washington, DC along with a guest to attend an awards ceremony in June. The winner’s artwork will also go on display in a busy corridor that leads to the U.S. Capitol, used daily by Members of Congress and visitors to Washington, D.C.

The second, third and fourth place winners will have their work displayed in one of Congressman McNerney’s three offices, located in Washington, D.C., Stockton and Antioch.

Rules for Submissions:

The contest is open to all high school students in the 9th District.

The deadline for artwork to be submitted is Friday, April 10, 2015.

Entries may be up to  28” x 28” x 4” (including the frame).

The art work may be:

  • Paintings – including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints – including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography

All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution.

Submissions and a release form can be dropped off at either of Congressman McNerney’s district offices.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
