CHP: Public’s Help Wanted After Shots Fired During Road Rage on I-580

Monday afternoon at approximately 1 pm, a road rage incident on eastbound I-580, west of Grand Avenue in Oakland left one vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

The driver of a Honda admitted to tailgating and unsafely passing a black Mercedes four-door sedan, while one of the occupants within the Honda displayed a rude hand gesture towards the driver of that vehicle. Subsequently, the driver of the Mercedes accelerated alongside the Honda within the center median portion of the freeway, produced a handgun, and began to fire the weapon multiple times at the Honda.

Luckily, neither of the two occupants within the Honda sustained gunshot wounds. Multiple bullet holes were located along the left side of the vehicle once CHP Investigators responded to the scene.

The driver of the Honda pulled over and contacted 9-1-1. The Mercedes sped off. The driver of the Mercedes was described only as a black male adult. The Mercedes was described as a black four-door sedan, with a missing rear license plate and the front license plate tucked between the dashboard and the front windshield.

CHP – Golden Gate Division Investigative Services Unit responded to the scene and shut down the eastbound lanes of traffic on I-580 for 30 to 40 minutes, while they combed the area for evidence. Several shell casing were located and booked into evidence.
