This week, students in Brentwood and Oakley return to school after summer break which will increase traffic around local schools.

To help mitigate risks, Officer John Fransen of the California Highway Patrol – Contra Costa Division, provided some safety tips which includes giving yourself an extra 10-15 minutes each morning.

  • BUS STOP: Drivers are required by law to stop for school buses with activated flashing red lights.
  • SCHOOL ZONE: 25 MPH is the speed limit in School Zones when children are present.
  • PAY ATTENTION: Focus on driving and not on distractions. No distraction is worth a life.
  • WALK AWARE: Use a crosswalk to cross the street. Always look in both directions twice before crossing the street. Never dart out into traffic.
