California Veterans Will No Longer Pay Animal Shelters Adoption Fees

by ECT

Veterans in California will no longer pay pet adoption fees to animal shelters after Senate Bill 245 was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday.

The bill, SB 245, was introduced by Senator Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) who says California is home to 2 million military veterans, including many who struggle to cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and could benefit from an animal companion.

The bill passed 76-0 out of the State Assembly and 37-0 out of the State Senate.

According to the Bill:

This bill would prohibit a public animal shelter from charging an adoption fee for a dog or cat if the person adopting the dog or cat presents to the public animal shelter a current and valid driver’s license or identification card with the word “VETERAN” printed on its face pursuant to the above-described provision. The bill also would authorize a public animal shelter to limit the number of dogs and cats adopted from that public animal shelter by an eligible veteran to one dog and cat each 6-month period.

SB 245 received support from the California Association of Veterans Service Agencies

I think he works at the VA in Martinez. A friend of mine works there (he’s a Veteran) and he says the same thing. Maybe “respect” to some Veterans is “no special treatment.”

No one would get out after 15 years unless they were kicked out for some sort of misconduct.
