SACRAMENTO – California State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego) today introduced a bill that would prohibit public agencies, during gun buy-back events, from handing out taxpayer-funded vouchers to any store that sells firearms.
Giving taxpayer money to gun retailers is both outrageous and counterproductive at a time when gun violence is a national epidemic, she said.
“It is a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars to give a gift card to a retailer who profits off selling guns,” Assemblywoman Gonzalez Fletcher said. “The last thing we should be doing is giving a person who turns in a gun a voucher to a place that sells guns.”
Gun buy-back programs are usually sponsored by local police departments, often in partnership with local community organizations. During these events, a person who turns in a firearm typically gets a voucher or gift card in exchange.
Many gun buy-back programs issue gift cards to large retailers, some of which – such as Walmart — are known to sell firearms or firearm accessories. AB 1903 would prevent a person who gets a voucher in exchange for a firearm from then using that voucher to buy a new gun. More broadly, the bill would also prevent these gun buy-back events from increasing business for the very retailers who are contributing to the madness of gun proliferation in America.

Oh my, another piece of worthless legislation brought to you by the same woman that legislated the free diaper program. If a gun buyback participant would be devious enough to take their $100 and upgrade to a new Glock they still would pay DOJ transfer fees submit to a background check and albeit they are a law abiding citizen. Haven’t seen any of our local thugs carrying a legally bought firearm, all stolen, serial numbers ground off barrels cut down etc. When will Sacramento address the serious problems confronting his State. This is a headline grabbing press release from her office to give the illusion that she’s on top of some major problem. I don’t buy it.
