At 3:10 am Sunday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire in the 3500 block of Gateway Road on Bethel Island.

It was reported that the fire was the size of a football field and started from a PG&E pole in a field according to multiple callers. There were reported at least two-trailers threatened by fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported multiple structures were threatened and Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office and Oakley Police began evacuating people from the mobile homes as firefighters attacked the fire in the canal area behind the mobile homes.

Firefighters were able to protect the mobile homes, however, due to high winds, embers were blowing into a gas station and to a field across street. Two additional strike teams were requested as crews battled a gas station that had caught fire.

While battling vegetation fire along a hillside, it was report that model homes became threatened with at least one home starting to catch fire. Engine 81 and Engine 82 from Contra Costa County Fire were able to make quick knockdown.

By 4:22 am, the fire was contained and confirmed the gas station fire was out. Extensive mop up was expected. The fire district and sheriffs office reportedly had 50-75 people evaluated and requested Red Cross to Scout Hall.

Units were being released by 4:30 am.

Very nice reporting, thank you! None of the larger news sources mentioned this. I’m in the Martinez area, and found you on Twitter. Keep up the good work!
