Updated: Firefighters Respond to Hazmat Call at Bay Point BART Station

At 1:30 pm Wednesday, Contra Costa County Fire and Contra Costa Hazmat was dispatched to a hazardous material call at the Bay Point BART Station in the 1700 block of W. Leland Road in Pittsburg.

A full response was dispatched which included firefighters, AMR and County Hazmat along with BART Police after initial reports of a vehicle with a sign that said hazardous gas warning with an unconscious person inside.

When a BART Police officer approached the vehicle, he began to feel lightheaded–at that point, a second AMR unit was dispatched to the scene.

As of 1:48 pm, a county hazmat representative was on scene, however, the type of gas was not yet identified.

Update
As of 3:20 pm, Battalion 8 stated the County Coroner was requested to the scene.

According to fire dispatch radio there was one victim.

Person in the vehicle had a mask on their face, connected to a bag with a chemical in it. Firefighters read H2S in the air up to 18ppm.

There are resources out there – if you’re thinking about suicide google it and get help. If you know someone who’s contemplating suicide you can also call for help.

Really sad…

I was following that too. H2S seems like a weird choice of gas for suicide, but nothing surprises me anymore.
