Bay Point: Duplex Destroyed in Sunday Afternoon Fire, Firefighter Injured

by ECT

At 3:41 pm Sunday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to what was originally reported as a fence fire along with a vehicle on fire in the 100 block of Loftus Road in Bay Point.

While responding, units observed a large column of black smoke and determined this to be a working fire. A short-time later, they confirmed this was a duplex on fire and requested a second alarm response as a neighboring mobile home park nearby was threatened.

During the incident, a life safety hazard came into play as power lines came down along with several trees that caught fire which limited access to the fire. There was also a gas line on fire and PG&E was requested to the scene to assist in turning off both the electric and gas to the home.

No injuries were reported, and two families were displaced in the incident. Several vehicles were also destroyed. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital where they were treated and released for a minor burn.

The roadway was expected to be closed for some time as a power pole and lines will have to be replaced. Currently, 377 PG&E customers are without power. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office was also on scene providing traffic and crowd control.

As of 7:20 pm, CONFIRE confirmed the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious.
