Updated: One Dead in Head-On Crash on Vasco Road

by ECT

At 2:31 pm Tuesday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and the California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a head-on crash at Vasco Road at Camino Diablo in the Town of Byron.

Upon arrival, AMR located a big rig on its side with 3 other vehicles involved. They confirmed at least one person was deceased on scene.

Upon arrival of East Contra Costa Fire, they stated one dead along with two people who sustained minor injuries.

Expect delays on Vasco Road for several hours.

UPDATE PER CHP

This afternoon at about 2:30pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a three vehicle collision on Vasco Road just south of Camino Diablo Road. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, the male driver (27yr old man) of a white Chevrolet pickup truck was declared deceased at the scene. A box truck and a GMC SUV were also involved. A sigalert was issued shortly after the collision and Vasco Road was completely shutdown in both directions due to the collision investigation. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of identity of the deceased male driver.

In the initial investigation it appears that the driver of the Chevrolet was driving northbound on Vasco Road and veered over the center solid double yellow lines and into the southbound lane, directly in front of the box truck and subsequently collided head on with the box truck. As the box truck spun out, the GMC SUV that was directly behind it collided into the crashed box truck. Unfortunately the driver of the Chevrolet did not survive and was declared deceased at the scene. The drivers of box truck and GMC had only minor complaint of pain injuries. One lane of Vasco Road was opened some time after the collision and completely opened at 7:05pm.

This incident is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980. Thank you.

Sad Vasco Rd we need relief on this deadly stretch. Our County Supervisors need to act now. With all the Gas tax revenue in addition to other state, federal roads money, they are allowing these situations to continue. I understand they want to connect J4 to Vasco. No, just frigid fix Vasco to accommodate all the development you approved that created this issue.

Don’t forget all the dumbasses that love to pass the line of traffic in the opposite lane at 65+ just to swerve back into the traffic line when they see a car coming the opposite way. Once these assholes learn to drive and the county fixes Vasco, the road will be safe.

Install temporary K rails along the entire stretch. Not that hard. What IS one life worth? Apparently $0 to the supervisors when you’re on this road. Too bad it’s between counties so it will take state funding to do it- I doubt they will ever co-op on this need. Lousy POS supervisors in both counties. That means you Diane and Federal. The others, too.

George Mar 11, 2020 - 6:00 am

Dude. Diane and Federal have nothing to do with dumb decisions by inconsiderate people

The hazard that is this road is something the supervisors should address. They “oversee” this county. This road is a problem. It’s their job as PAID and elected officials to look at the problems in this county and fix them, and at the least work towards finding a solution whether it’s to get other offices on board or push for changes; that’s why we elect them. That’s why they get paid- what is it now- $150K/ year? About twice a year this happens easily. It was even worse before the road was modernized. Sure, the dude might have been distracted, or driving recklessly- who knows? But what if it was one of the innocent parties in one of the other cars that died? Did they deserve that death sentence? No. The guy in the white truck didn’t deserve what he got either, honestly. What if he had a blowout that caused this accident? What happens the next time IF it is simply a blowout that causes the other car to veer into head on traffic? It happens lightning fast. A K-Rail would greatly reduce, if not eliminate the head on collisions on Vasco.

If you have driven on Vasco you know that it isn’t the road that’s the problem. Especially at Camino Diablo, the problem is stupid and /or inconsiderate bullies who want to fly around everyone in front of them. True, there may be the occasional medical reason for this, but its almost always stupidity. My sympathies go to the other drivers, and towards the family of the deceased. Vasco has been vastly improved over what it used to be

Pat Mar 11, 2020 - 9:34 am

This is Diane’s jurisdiction.

Here we go again. Another East County driver does something stupid ( surprise) , and creates havoc and mayhem. Lots of money has been spent on fixing Vasco but, as someone who has seen countless idiots on it, you can’t fix stupid

All it takes is what another commenter suggested and has been suggested one hundred times before, a K Rail or a Type 60 Rail. It’s so easy yet so hard for the elected leaders. Enjoy your high rise multi million dollar new county offices while people die on Vasco. Pathetic.

Personal responsibility Mar 11, 2020 - 12:13 pm

First and foremost My condolences to the family of this young man who passed away.

However to all the folks playing the blame game……we can’t wrap the world in bubble wrap, there are countless 2 lane roads all over this county that have the probability for this type of accident. Without knowing the facts I won’t speculate what might have happened, but I witness people driving erratically and distracted all the time. As George so eloquently put it “ you can’t fix stupid” and as a father of 4 grown kids whom all drive…. I’ve heard (as I no doubt many have) the “it won’t happen to me” mentality.
I bet if they were to place K rails and someone were to have a solo accident and kill themselves…there would be someone blaming it on the k rail! I’ve driven vasco, the road is fine, nicely paved..wide lanes…..fix the drivers..drive attentive at the speed limit and pray for the best….. all you can do.

A majority of traffic accidents in Vasco, Kirker Pass, Hwy 4, Brentwood, Oakland, Antioch, etc are caused by reckless drivers (DUI, speeding, running red lights, distracted drivers)! Every 12 minutes someone dies in a motor vehicle crash, every 10 seconds an injury! Drive safe folks!

Alice Mar 12, 2020 - 3:02 pm

The problems aren’t the roads, it is the stupid drivers. It is sad that someone, a young someone, died. But, totally on him. Sorry for his family, and the families of the drivers this guy hit.
