Supervisor Glover Gives Away 1,200 Turkey’s

Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover’s annual turkey giveaway took off in a big way this year.

With the new configuration of his district, spanning the county’s north coast from Pinole to Antioch, the supervisor was able to find the funding for 1200 turkeys, a hefty increase from the 600 to 700 given in the old District V.

“For the first time, Philips 66 and Shell joined the holiday effort,” said Supervisor Glover. “They and the Calpine Energy Corporation, which has been helping us for many years, made it all possible.”

With the contributions from the refineries, the supervisor and his staff, aided by employees from the refineries, delivered turkeys to various agencies in the western part of District V last Friday (Nov. 16, 2012).

Frozen turkeys were delivered to a number of social service agencies and churches. It was up to the various agencies to decide to whom they would be given. Some of them will include the turkeys in a Thanksgiving grocery bag, others will cook the turkeys for a free Thanksgiving dinner for the needy. Most of them simply give the birds in a first-come, first-serve basis.

“In this recession, times are tough for many families,” said Glover. “To be able to help some folks, even in a modest way, makes it is one my favorite days of the year.”
