20 Apply, 6 Finalist Named in Vacant East Bay Regional Parks Board Seat

With a vacant seat on the East Bay Regional Park District, a total of 20 residents have applied and 6-finalist have emerged.

The 6 finalist to fill the term vacated by Diane Burgis after she won a seat on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors includes:

  • Colin Jay Coffey – Hercules: is a member of the Park Districts advisory committee for 13-years and is a park ambassador for 13-years. He was also involved in the Contra Costa Democratic Party.
  • Ken Gray, Jr. – Antioch – served 30 years with the City of Pittsburg where he was a recreation supervisor, was a coordinator at the Ambrose Park & Recretion Cetner, and has many community organization affiliations.
  • AnaMarie Avila Farias – Martinez: She works with the County Housing & Community Development, served on the Martinez Planning Commission and City Council.
  • Satinder Singh Malhi – Martinez: is a former staffer with the California State Legislator working for Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Senator Ellen Corbett and Senator Jackie Speier. He also worked at the City of Martinez as a special project assistant in the Economic Development Department.
  • Lloyd Lee Mason – Bay Point: previously served on the Ambrose Park and Recreation Board as well as volunteered with youth. He has also served on the Bay Point Community Foundation and volunteered with Bay Point Code Enforcement.
  • Timothy W. Platt – Martinez: Stated he is a community activist while working in sales and marketing for 30-years. He is also a founding member of Martinez Regional Land Trust (now John Muir Land Trust).

A Nominating Committee will now interview selected candidates on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Interviews of finalists and formal appointment will be made at a special Board meeting open to the public on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.

The seat is for Ward 7 represents the communities of Antioch, Bay Point, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Crockett, Discovery Bay, Hercules, Knightsen, Martinez, Mt. View, Oakley, Pacheco, portion of Pinole, Pittsburg, Port Costa, Rodeo and Vine Hill.

A three-member Board committee will review the applications, interview selected candidates and recommend three finalists for interview by the full Board. The full Board will interview finalists at a special public Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The East Bay Regional Park District Board consists of seven representatives, elected by ward, who are responsible for the policy direction of the Park District. The Ward 7 director position will be up for election in 2018. Board members receive $100 per eligible meeting, up to a maximum of $1,000 per month, and are eligible for benefits.
