Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D – Oakley) issued the following statement in response to a Department of Water Resources (DWR) press release announcing the installation of a temporary salinity barrier in the Delta:
“My top priority is to protect water quality in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, for my District and for the state as a whole. California continues to face serious challenges in the wake of this historic drought, and taking preemptive action to limit further devastation is a responsible decision.
Similar temporary barriers were constructed and removed in the Delta in 1976-77, and proved to be successful in mitigating difficult drought conditions. DWR has confirmed that this installation will also be temporary, and that the rock barrier will be removed no later than November 1st to avoid flood season and potential harm to migratory fish. It is my hope that this conservation management tool will help to preserve the existing water quality in the Central Delta so that we are prepared to tackle any unanticipated challenges that may arise as we move forward this year.”
