Wrong-Way Driver in Stolen Vehicle Causes Vehicle Crash, Shut Down Eastbound Highway 4 Saturday

by ECT

At 1:39pm Saturday, a wrong-way driver on eastbound Highway 4 caused a shutdown of Highway 4 after a head-on vehicle crash. The vehicle then became engulfed in flames according to the CHP.

Multiple parties were injured in this collision and transported to the hospital but for non-life-threatening injuries.

CHP stated in the initial investigation, they have learned that the Contra Costa County sheriffs department was attempting to pull this truck over because it was reported as a stolen vehicle.

According to CHP:

POLICE ACTIVITY on HWY-4

This afternoon at approximately 1:39pm, Contra Costa CHP received a call of a truck (grey Ford F-250 pick up) driving wrong way within the eastbound lanes of HWY-4 at Willow Pass Road in Concord. Shortly thereafter, that Ford collided head-on with a red SUV in the far right #4 lane of eastbound HWY-4, east of Port Chicago HWY, and became fully engulfed in flames.

Multiple parties were injured in this collision and transported to the hospital but for non-life-threatening injuries. And the driver of the Ford suspect truck, exited and fled the collision scene and the Contra Costa County sheriffs office is searching for him now within the area. CHP is handling the collision investigation of this incident. The Contra Costa County sheriffs department will have further information as to the driver of the suspect Ford truck and the original reason to stop the Ford.

In the initial investigation we have learned that the Contra Costa County sheriffs department was attempting to pull this truck over because it was reported as a stolen vehicle. The driver in the Ford fled in the truck and drove wrong way to avoid officers following him, westbound in the the eastbound lanes of traffic. Then the Ford collided head-on with the red SUV in the eastbound lanes of HWY-4. Traffic is still heavy in this area due to this incident. Take an alternate route if possible.

Upon CHP, Fire, and medical personnel arrival, the driver had already fled the scene and CHP remained on scene to handle the traffic collision investigation. This is still an active investigation and anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Contra Costa CHP or the Contra Costa County sheriffs office. Thank you.

Sick of it. Happens too often at that Willow Pass EB off ramp, usually late at night, without headlights driving wrong way in emergency lane by fast lane. Crazy, crazy.

Another major crash? What’s going on with Hwy 4…… both west and east-bound? This is getting ridiculous! People seem to think they are practicing for the Indy 500 race!
