Woman Killed in Crosswalk by Driver Under Influence of Controlled Substance

A 43-year-old  was suspected of driving under the influence of a controlled substance struck and killed a woman walking in a crosswalk Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred around 8:16 a.m. occurred on O’Hara Ave and Grant Street in Brentwood which left a 74-year-old woman dead and was taken to Sutter Delta Medical Center.

Police shared that the 43-year-old driver struck the women, then hit a curb, a fire hydrant and a sound wall. A juvenile passenger was in the accident, but suffered only a minor injury from the seat belt while the driver was not injured.

During the search of the vehicle, Brentwood Police found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Police immediately called for a blood alcohol test on scene and it was determined the drive was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The 43-year-old was taken to County Jail in Martinez on suspicious of vehicle manslaughter, child endangerment, driving under the influence resulting in injury, and drug related charges. He is expected to be booked later this afternoon.

According to Sgt. Bryan Smith, the driver did remain on scene during the incident and appeared to be distraught at what happened. He also shared Brentwood Police had up to 6-officers working the incident.

“Our number one priority is safety of the people involved while providing aid to those who needed as we were first on scene,” said Sgt. Smith.
