Walnut Creek: Three Killed in Crash

by ECT

At approximately 10:50 pm Tuesday, the California CHP and Contra Costa County Fire responded to a report of a vehicle crash on northbound I-680 near N Main Street in Walnut Creek which killed three people.

It was reported that a vehicle crashed into a tree which sparked a fire. It was later confirmed that three people were inside the vehicle, but no other information was released.

8:00 am Update per CHP: FATALITY CRASH KILLS 3 on I-680

Last night at approximately 10:40pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a solo vehicle collision that was on fire located on the North Main Street offramp of I-680 northbound in Walnut Creek. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, a Pontiac Grand Prix was fully engulfed in flames. After the Fire Department extinguished the flames, it was determined a Pontiac Grand Prix was driven from the offramp into a dirt vegetation area off the roadway and directly into a tree. The vehicle caught fire with all three occupants still inside, subsequently killing all occupants. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of identity of all the occupants. (2 adult females and 1 adult male)

Our preliminary investigation indicates that the driver (18yr old female from Fairfield) was driving the Pontiac on I-680 northbound and exited at the North Main Street offramp. It appears the driver took the offramp too fast and veered off the roadway into the dirt vegetation area and collided head on into a tree. The Pontiac caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames, killing all three occupants. The front right passenger was an 18yr old female and the rear passenger was a 47yr old male from Oakland.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision as it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the vehicle just prior to the collision, please contact Contra Costa CHP at (925)646-4980

Funny thing is this call never came out as a vehicle accident Engine 1 was initially dispatched as a tree fire. Then they realized it was a vehicle fire. Then it was witnesses to the bodies In the car. Never was an ambulance dispatched to this crash.
