The CCC Flood Control District recently built the Upper Sand Creek Basin,  a $10 million flood protection and habitat restoration project.

This very cool project among other things features:

  • an expanded basin that can store 8 times more storm water than before,
  • an 1800-foot-long dam, ranging in height from 1 to 40-feet,
  • restoration of 3,500 linear feet of Sand Creek, including planting over 2500 willow trees
  • creation of 10-acres of wetlands inside the basin, and
  • & the installation of an innovative trash capture device to help clean up the creek

FOMCW is working with the Flood Control District on the 10 acres of wetland restoration and will be planting 1000 native grasses and 400 native plants that were propagated from the area.

I am looking for 100 volunteers to come out and help put the plants in the ground.  This is a great site for us to be able to teach people about ways we can clean up our water ways and create more naturalized creek systems that also protect our homes from flooding.  This site will also be the site of many future ball parks for the City of Antioch some day in the future.  At 10 AM we will be having a ribbon cutting with local community leaders and hope you will participate.

I would be most grateful if you would consider helping us with the following:

  • Attend! We need community leaders to be aware of this very cool project.
  • Help Spread the Word! I want to engage more of our Antioch neighbors to participate as it is IN Antioch!
  • Suggest other groups that can help! FOMCW LOVES partners!  Churches, service groups, neighborhood groups, scouts, classes-  we want to reach out to them all!

Thank you for your help with this project & please let me know if you plan to attend.
