Update per CHP:

BICYCLE FATALITY COLLISION tonight on Canal Road in Bay Point

Tonight at about 8:37pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a vehicle vs. a bicyclist collision on Canal Road eastbound, just west of Emerald Cove Drive. Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, the rider (34yr old male from Bay Point) had been ejected from the bicycle and was trapped under the Ford Explorer and unresponsive. He was declared deceased on scene. The Contra Costa Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners office will be handling the release of the identity of the male rider killed.

In the initial investigation, it appears that the male rider of the bicycle was traveling eastbound on Canal Road but within the middle of the roadway and not within the bicycle lane. The Driver (51yr old male from Pittsburg) of the Ford Explorer was also traveling on Canal Road Eastbound and approaching the bicycle from behind. As the Ford was at the bicycle, for unknown reasons, the rider of the bicycle made an abrupt left turn directly into the right side of the Explorer. He was ejected off the bicycle and onto the asphalt underneath the Explorer. The male rider sustained fatal injuries. The male driver of the Explorer was not injured.

Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be a factor in this collision but it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980. Thank you.
