Update per CHP:

Fatal Crash on Kirker Pass this morning

This morning at about 8:39am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a solo vehicle traffic collision on southbound Kirker Pass at Hess Road. Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, it was determined that a 2006 Dodge SUV was driven off the roadway and down the embankment from Kirker Pass and overturned.

Four people were inside the Dodge, including two children.

Three parties were transported to John Muir Hospital and one to Oakland Children’s Hospital. Tragically the female child died from her injuries due to the collision and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. All parties reside in Antioch.

Rain and weather were significant at the time of this incident. In the initial investigation, it appears that the Dodge, driven by a 27yr old male, was driven off the roadway for unknown reasons and down the embankment where it overturned. All parties remained in the Dodge immediately after the crash.

The driver suffered minor injuries. His 21yr old female passenger also suffered minor injuries and both adults were transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.

The 6yr old male son of the female passenger was transported to Oakland Children’s Hospital in Oakland with minor to moderate injuries.

The 5yr old female daughter of the passenger sustained major injuries and was unresponsive on scene. She was transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek but tragically was pronounced deceased while at the hospital. The Coroners office will be the lead agency regarding the release of the identity of the deceased girl.

It also appears in the initial investigation that child safety seats were not used properly or at all.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision. This collision is still under investigation and if anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980. Thank you.

People drive too crazy on that road that was never intended to be used as a freeway. Those large trucks hauling dirt should not even be allowed on Kirker Pass. Speed limit should be 45 mph, not 75 mph! Seeno towns equal zero quality of life and ridiculously high property taxes for carp housing that should never have passed inspection.

It’s wet out there. Drive safely…

It’s a tragedy that a child lost her life, because an other idiot was driving too fast for the conditions on Kirker Pass road, it’s not the road people it’s incompetent unsafe driving, I see it every time I drive that road, you would think that with all the accidents and injuries that happen on that stretch of road that people would get a clue, but nooooooooooooooooo everybody has to drive like it’s a big race, just senseless selfish and stupid. And no car seat or appropriate restraints being used.

Actually faster driving is safer. Ever heard of the Autobahn? No speed limits and statistically safer than American highways.

Jeff Adkins Mar 2, 2018 - 11:53 am

The Autobahn is not a winding two lane country road without shoulders.

With that weird turn at the bottom of the hill if headed into Piitsburg. Lanes are too narrow for the types of commercial and recreational vehicles that are too large to be even going over the hill in this weather. I can”t believe how many fatalities since I’ve been driving it. Tonight I wanted to go slower because it was wet and of course someone riding on my rear down the hill so I turned on my emergency flashers. People act like it us a felony if you want to drivec10 mikes slower on that Dr appt drainage impaired road in wet weather. Whomever built it flunked engineering and geometry as far as I’m concerned.

Greg – I’ve driven on the Autobahn and the Autostrada many times and with the extremely high speeds, if you’re in a crash, it is usually fatal to both parties. However, Germans and Italians are taught how to drive safely and a person cannot just be handed a drivers license like they can be here. Their drivers’ education is quite complex. One has to know the mechanics of how a car operates and the driving and written tests are not that easy.

So sad. Prayers for the family.

Simonpure Mar 2, 2018 - 12:11 pm

It is sad but the mother should be charged with child neglect at a minimum.

No excuses Mar 2, 2018 - 1:18 pm

Greg we are not in Germany. Move back over there and enjoy the speeding over there.

Done…..you sound like an idiot. The speed limit is 55 MPH on Kirker Pass Road and what does Seeno have to do with any of this?

BTW….the gravel in those trucks comes from Clayton and used in almost every paving and concrete job in central and east county.

How about we hold the two adults in the car accountable for the SOLO crash in the rain.

People act like it is a felony if you want to drive 10 miles slower on that dangerous, drainage impaired road in wet weather. Whomever built it flunked engineering and geometry as far as I’m concerned. It is better going into Concord than Pittsburg but of course it is. Just like eBARY versus regular BART which equates to discrimination against East County residents.

Boyfriend an mother should get charged with child endangerment……sorry for the lost

Ridiculous people are so quick to judge then when the articles updated with facts I bet half of you feel dumb as f*#%. Prayers to the family and this goes to show how important it is to have your children safely restrained in the proper car seats/boosters.

Who in hell designed Kirker Pass? It is a real death trap! I bet the designer was someone who was forced to drop out of civil engineering school! That road must be redesigned and rebuilt to a more drivable venue. This road is too steep! It should be shut down and recalibrated by being leveled out. People also don’t know how to get the uphill momentum going and then drive safely down hill. Most just ride their brakes instead of putting their cars into second gear! I have not seen any law enforcement people watching traffic but only saw them when there is a crash.

I was commuting to work when I saw first responders rush to the scene. My thoughts and prayers. We need barriers over Kirker Pass- isn’t this County Property??

Nick Mar 6, 2018 - 8:56 am

If Kirker Pass is too dangerous for you, don’t drive it. It’s not mandatory.

Toon Mar 8, 2018 - 7:28 am

The problem isn’t Kirker Pass. It’s idiots who drive negligently in unsafe conditions with an improperly restrained child in the car. Poor kids..
