On September 17, 2014 the Town of Discovery Bay Community Service District Board of Directors approved a location for Discovery Bay’s first off-leash dog park. The topic has been visited by the Board on many occasions since 2010 and each time efforts to move forward have been stalled by budget concerns or lack of a viable site.
The newly approved off-leash park will be located at the Discovery Bay Community Center, at 1601 Discovery Bay Blvd. The park will be approximately one acre in size and was chosen due to its relatively isolated location at the Community Center, and the low cost to modify the site.
“This location is important because although the project site has been approved, there are still financial considerations looming”, noted Town of Discovery Bay Parks and Recreation Manager Fairin Perez. “The modifications that will be necessary to convert the site to an off-leash dog park are relatively minimal”, she stated.
The District is currently seeking volunteers as well as donations to help cover the $5,000 needed for the cost of new fencing, park benches, and pet waste and watering stations. The Town is seeking sponsorships from the public and local businesses alike to help make this long time dream a reality. Businesses who would like to become a park sponsor can donate funds or provide materials to become a sponsor, and memorial and dedication plaques are being sold for $50 each, providing the donor an opportunity to have a small bone-shaped plaque engraved with a personal message.
“Pet owners are thrilled to have the opportunity to let their dogs run free, and legally. Offers of labor and financial support have already started,” stated Town of Discovery Bay Director Marianne Wiesen.
