Tonight: Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed to Talk Flood Control & Marsh Creek

by ECT

On Thursday night between 6:30 to 8:30 pm, the Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed will host the Contra Costa Flood Control District to discuss the role that Flood Control plays in protecting homes and helping restore environmental resources.

According to FOMCW after World War II, the population of Contra Costa expanded dramatically. Due to this rapid growth, many homes and businesses were built in low lying areas susceptible to flooding. In 1951, as a result of prior widespread flooding, the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District was formed to provide flood protection. Over the past 59 years, the Flood Control District has completed many major flood control projects in Contra Costa County in order to make it a better and safer place to live.

Today, the Flood Control District’s mission has expanded to include stewardship of the environmental resources in the district-owned creeks including Marsh Creek.

May 9:  Marsh Creek Reservoir Tour

Join us for a hike in an area of Marsh Creek normally closed off to the public.  Marsh Creek reservoir was built almost 60 years ago to help protect the surrounding areas from flooding.  Mercury washed down from the Mercury Min off Morgan Territory road and that sediment lies in the Marsh Creek Reservoir. The Contra Costa Flood Control is working to contain the mercury issue and hopefully expand the reservoir for better flood control protection.  Right next door is the John Marsh House that is being repaired and restored by the Marsh Historic Trust.  East Bay Regional Park District is working to open up parts of the Marsh Creek State Park adjacent to the reservoir and Marsh House.  Meet representatives from all these agencies and enjoyed a very scenic and fairly easy walk.

We recommend you park off the road and carefully walk to the main gate on Marsh Creek Road.  Wear appropriate shoes and clothing.  Heavy rain will cancel the event (we could only hope!!).  Weather can start off cool and warm up quickly so layers are always recommended.  Bring water & snack if you need to.  The photography opportunities are terrific here!
