On Thursday, June 23 at about 7:15 am, an inmate during morning recreation time at the Martinez Detention Facility notified a Deputy that there was an inmate passed out in the shower.
The Deputy immediately responded and found the inmate slumped over inside the shower. A bedsheet was tied to the shower frame.
The Deputy called for assistance and started CPR. Medical staff responded to the module and assisted with performing resuscitation efforts. The Fire Department and an ambulance also responded.
The inmate was later pronounced deceased at the scene. He is not being identified at this time.
The countywide officer-involved fatal incident protocol was invoked. The D.A.’s Office is investigating along with the Office of the Sheriff.
Update:
Investigators from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the D.A.’s Office are continuing to investigate an in custody death that occurred on Thursday at the Martinez Detention Facility in Martinez.
The deceased inmate is identified as 57-year-old Alexander Legaspi of Bay Point. Legaspi was originally arrested by the Office of the Sheriff on July 6, 2015. He was being held on 15 felony counts of child molestation; his bail was set at $22,000,000.

An autopsy was conducted this morning. The cause of death is asphyxia by hanging.
