On March 22, 2018, the Safe Return Project is hosting a community forum to meet the District Attorney of Contra Costa County, Diana Becton.
Local District Attorneys (DAs) are much more than the “Top Cop” for every one of California’s 58 counties. A DA has the power–and the duty–to protect workers, consumers, and the environment. Her responsibilities go beyond prosecuting crimes. A DA can offer alternatives to jail and prison, and can implement protocols to ensure fair treatment, protect against unethical practices, and address serious issues of police misconduct.
Criminal justice reform is leading Bay Area news lately — from over-policing, mass incarceration, review of misdemeanor offenses like personal possession of marijuana (now legal), police shootings, and local enforcement of federal immigration policies that rip families apart. This event is an opportunity for constituents to be heard, and for DA Becton to listen, on pressing issues in person and in real time.
District Attorneys (DAs) are locally elected public officials. Their power over mass incarceration, their wide discretion to charge or dismiss, and even their identity can go largely unremarked and unknown. This event is a great opportunity for constituents to get to know their local DA and to check if their DA’s actions and values are in alignment with their own
