Washington, DC – As the result of his efforts to bolster critical flood damage reduction measures in the region, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has included $23.1 million in their Fiscal Year 2020 Work Plan to fund the start of the Lower San Joaquin River Flood Risk Management Project.
Just one of two “New Start” construction flood control projects designated by the Corps nationwide, this project will be conducted in partnership with the San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency (SJAFCA) and the State of California. The project will increase the resilience of 262 critical infrastructure sites – 12 of which are considered essential to life safety – and help protect an estimated 125,000 residents in the Stockton metropolitan area.
“This project is a significant investment in the safety and resilience of our community,” said Congressman McNerney. “Regional flooding is a hazard that poses a threat to public health, personal property, and could result in the loss of life. The Lower San Joaquin River Flood Risk Management Project will play a critically important role in strengthening our local infrastructure, providing our community with the protection necessary to withstand future major flood events while creating jobs and growing the economy.”
