Washington, DC – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai to follow up on the Chairman’s commitment to hold a field hearing in Northern California regarding the cell tower outages during the recent wildfires.
“It is critical that the Commission hear from individuals who were directly affected by the cell tower outages,” Congressman McNerney wrote. “It is also critical that the Commission hear why cell towers went down during the power shutoffs, including what backup power was in place and what coordination existed between the wireless carriers and the utilities leading up to and during the shutoffs.”
In his letter, the Congressman requests that Chairman Pai outline the date, time and location for the field hearing, as well as what steps the Commission will take to ensure that all relevant stakeholders will be invited to testify at the field hearing.
Last month, during an FCC oversight hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, Congressman McNerney asked Chairman Pai to hold a field hearing on this subject, receiving a commitment from the Chairman to hold the hearing by June 5, 2020.

FCC czar Ajit Pai, former Verizon lawyer, doesn’t care about us peasants And yeah maybe the cell towers went down because the aerial backbone that was feeding it got burnt, hmmm or maybe these cell sites stopped working when power went down and they don’t have back up batteries for sites up in the boonies or maybe too much communication at the time of emergency. He doesn’t have no balls and he won’t hold the carriers accountable, That’s for sure
