Washington, DC – Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced that his office is now accepting submissions for the 2022 Congressional App Challenge (CAC). In partnership with the Internet Education Foundation, Members of Congress host these competitions for students in their districts as part of a nationwide program created to teach students how to code, foster an appreciation for computer science, and encourage students to learn valuable STEM-based skills.
“The Congressional App Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and creativity, while highlighting the importance of investing in STEM-based education,” said Congressman McNerney. “California’s 9th Congressional District has no shortage of talent, and I am looking forward to seeing this year’s submissions.”
The CAC is open to all students, regardless of coding experience, who meet the eligibility criteria and reside in the 9th Congressional District. Participating students will develop a software application in any programming language (example: C, C++, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, “block code,” etc.) for any platform (PC, web, tablet, robot, mobile, etc.). Students will then create and upload a three-minute video to YouTube, Vimeo, or any other video-hosting site explaining how the app works and what they learned by participating in the contest. Entrants may compete individually or in teams of up to four students.
The winning entries will be selected by a panel of judges, and the winning app from the 9th Congressional District will be featured on the House.gov website and the CongressionalAppChallenge.us website. CAC winners may also be eligible to have their app featured on a display in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
