Rep DeSaulnier’s Statement on the AG’s Findings of Mistreatment of ICE Detainees at West County Detention Facility

by ECT

Washington, DC  –  Today, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) issued the following statement after California Attorney General Xavier Becerra released the California Department of Justice Review of Immigration Detention in California report, which corroborates many of the allegations of mistreatment of undocumented immigrants at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond, California.

In November of 2017, Congressman DeSaulnier urged California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to conduct independent, third-party investigations of the West County Detention Facility.

“The Attorney General’s report affirms what we had long suspected—West County Detention Facility did not have the resources or the training necessary to properly care for the immigrants in its care. Every person should be treated with respect and dignity, and that was not happening. The residents of Contra Costa deserve to know that this was happening in the their backyard, and this report, combined with expert press reporting, finally sheds that light.”

Following multiple and varying allegations of abuse of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees at the West County Detention Facility, DeSaulnier also called for the termination of Contra Costa County’s ICE contract. In July of 2018, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office announced it would cancel its contract with ICE.

Desaulnier cares more about illegals than constituents. He is a far left extremist. Voting for him is higher taxes , open borders , and solar airplanes. Our Sheriff does a good job. Our Desaulnier is again grandstanding for political illegal votes. How about concentrating on homeless and blight instead of creating more…..

Pathetic. Deesallllner, you don’t give a rat’s ass about your legal taxpaying constituents. Drain the swamp in sacto. You are the problem. Those that can do get the job done. Those that cant do legislate. FU

Here is the summary of accusations made while in ICE custody:

Sexual Abuse. Between FY12 and March 2018, ICE received 1,448 allegations of sexual abuse in detention facilities. Only a small percent of these claims have been investigated.

Medical Negligence. While in ICE custody, detainees regularly receive substandard care. Pregnant women in particular receive insufficient medical attention while in custody, resulting in dehydration and even miscarriages. In FY17 alone, at least three women reportedly miscarried while in ICE custody.

Access to Counsel. Detainees often struggle to secure representation due to language barriers, wait times in detention facilities, and distance between detention facilities and government provided aid, all of which raise serious due process concerns.

Deaths. There have been over 170 reported deaths in ICE custody since 2003.

You can see how easily (except death) it will be to convince our politicians to make a law to cite and release illegal border crossers. Caravan organizers only need to tell the travelers to say I was denied counsel, forced into labor, assaulted, and not given medications I needed. Does not matter if true, because investigating the accusations are no longer needed. The travelers statements are consistent with other complainers. Investigating so many complaints becomes too costly. Illegal crossers win, the American Citizen competes against more people who have better support form our elected politicians.

What’s this “immigrants” crap? These are NOT immigrants! That title belongs to people who go through a process while in their OWN country! What we have here are invaders! They should have been detained at the border and marched back to where they came from. How long are we going to be putting up with this crap?
