Pedestrian in Critical Condition After Being Struck by Vehicle in Pittsburg

An adult male is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in the City of Pittsburg.

At 4:18 pm, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a vehicle crash at Somersville and Buchanan on the City of Antioch and City of Pittsburg border. Units arrived on scene to a person on the ground–he was later determined to be in critical condition.

By 4:45 pm, a medical helicopter landed to transports the male.

Antioch police and Pittsburg Police were dispatched to the area to provide traffic control.  The roadway is expected to be closed for an extended period of time.

Wednesday UPDATE via Pittsburg Police

On Tuesday January 18, 2022, just after 4:00 P.M. Pittsburg Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision on Buchanan Road east of Meadows Avenue. Medical and Contra Costa Fire personnel arrived and began treating the pedestrian for life threatening injuries.

The man was later transported by helicopter to an area hospital for further treatment. He is currently listed in critical, but stable condition.

Due to the extent of the man’s injuries, the Pittsburg Police Department Traffic Unit responded and took over the investigation. It was determined the driver of the vehicle was traveling west on Buchanan Road from Somersville Road. Prior to the collision, the pedestrian parked his vehicle along the westbound shoulder of Buchanan Road. The man then began to walk south across Buchanan Road. As the man entered the lane of traffic, he was struck by the involved vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation. The driver did show signs of being under the influence of recent drug use and later arrested by officers for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs – Causing Injury.

The roadway for Buchanan Road was closed during the investigation and reopened for traffic prior to 11:00 P.M.
