One Dead, Firefighter Injured in Two-Alarm Martinez Apartment Fire

At 7:23 am Saturday, Contra Costa County firefighters responded to a report of a commercial structure fire in the 90 block of Farm Lane in the City of Martinez.

The fire was upgraded to a two-alarm response.

Upon arrival Engine 13 reported smoke and flames from a 3 story twelve-unit Condo building.  Battalion 1 arrived on scene and confirmed fire on the 3rd story extending to the attic area.  Upon arrival Engine 13 was informed by a Martinez police officer that a resident was trapped inside one of the upstairs Condo units.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Quesada, crews made an aggressive attack on the fire as they moved in to search for and rescue the reported victim.

“During the search, fire crews did locate and remove one adult deceased fire victim.  In addition to the one citizen fatality, one firefighter was transported to the hospital for precautionary measures related to the incident,” said Quesada.

The cause and origin of the fire is undetermined but not suspicious per the Fire investigator on scene.  Investigators do not believe the fire cause is suspicious.
