Here is a look at some of the major events going on in East Contra Costa County for the weekend of October 8-9.


9:00 am: Out of the Darkness Walk
On October 8th, the community will come together for the second annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk in the City of Oakley. The walk will take place at Cypress Grove Community Park, located at 4001 Frank Hengel Way. Registration will begin at 8:00am. The opening ceremony and walk will start at 9:00am.

As of Saturday morning, the event has raised $36,175 with a goal of $40,000. The event has 629 participants.


2:00 pm: Lumpy’s Dinner Car Show & Burger Eating Contest
Lumpy’s Diner, alongside the Midnighter’s Car Club, is excited to announce the team efforts to support our local Heart of a Hero organization (www.heartofahero.org) with the 8th Annual Burger Eating Contest and Car Show. It is with a huge smile and great honor that we get to continue carrying on Lumpy’s legacy by joining forces with the incredible Spiderman in support of helping children from all walks of life.

Come join us as we kick off the day with kids festivities of all kinds, an amazing car show and absolutely great food and friends. Spots fill up fast for the car show, so arrive early to ensure an entry. All proceeds from the car show registration, raffle prizes and kid’s festival activities go directly to Heart of a Hero.

Lumpy’s will be showcasing new apparel and goodies and 10% of diner proceeds for the entire day will be donated to Heart of a Hero, so please make sure and grab yourself a bite to eat while you enjoy all there is to offer.

The main contest kicks off at 7:30 sharp. Raffle prizes and car show awards follow promptly after.


3:00 pm: Oktoberfest in Brentwood
In honor of Bavarian heritage, Brentwood celebrates this festival with beer, wine, good food, singing, lederhosen, German music, chicken dance, wiener dog parade and the very popular Beer Stein Games. Located in Downtown Brentwood City Park.  The event is free.

5:00 pm: Forejour at Leer Vineyards
Forejour-Antioch-PALOn October 8, a special benefit concert will be held at Leer Vineyards to help raise funds for the Antioch Police Activities League.

The concert will feature the band FOREJOUR:A Tribute to Foreigner and Journey and the proceeds will benefit Antioch PAL.  The cost per ticket is $35 (or $40 at the door) and will be held from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The band Forejour does one charity concert a year to give back to the community and the idea to give back to Antioch PAL came from the drummers wife, Jill Fister who is also a local Realtor.

Food will also be available for purchase on site. The event is 21 and over only.

5:00 pm: Antioch Sports Legends Gala

The Gala is October 8, 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM at the Lone Tree Golf Course and Event Center  4800 Golf Course Road, Antioch CA

6:30 pm: Antioch Speedway
Join the Antioch Speedway as they host a night of racing that includes Late Models, “A” Mods, “B” Mods and Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5:00 pm.

Explore a fire engine, home safety, tour the fire station and try on firefighter gear. This event is designed to allow the community to meet local firefighters and see what they do at a fire station. Smokey the bear will also make an appearance.

Those in attendance can enter to win “fire chief for a day” contest.

Station 93 is located at 530 O’Hara Avenue.


2:00 pm:  El Campanil presents its International Film Showcase Presents
Tanna (2015)  (Australia)

TANNA is set in the South Pacific where Wawa, a young girl from one of the last traditional tribes, falls in love with her chief’s grandson, Dain. When an intertribal war escalates, Wawa is unknowingly betrothed as part of a peace deal. The young lovers run away, but are pursued by enemy warriors intent on killing them. They must choose between their hearts and the future of the tribe, while the villagers must wrestle with preserving their traditional culture and adapting it to the increasing outside demands for individual freedom. TANNA is based on a true story and performed by the people of Yakel in Vanuatu.

Next Weekend

drama-factory-5k-run

The Drama Factory has announced they will host their 1st Annual Monster Dash 5k run/walk on October 15 at Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch.

This event is a Halloween-themed athletic event for all ages that includes a 5k run, a one mile run, and a children’s costume parade through Antioch’s scenic Contra Loma Regional Park. This is a fundraiser that helps keep the performing arts accessible to the community.

Registration fees include a unisex event t-shirt designed by local artist, and director, John Ballesteros; and a finisher’s ribbon. The first 5k overall male and female finishers will be awarded a plaque.  The first overall male and female in the 1 mile event will receive medals.
Note: You must register no later than October 7th to guarantee that you will receive a shirt as supplies are limited.
Costumes are encouraged, but optional.  Spectators are also encouraged to wear a costume.
