Newberry Out: A Change in Speaker for Youth Summit

An illness in the family of Jeremy Newberry has forced him to cancel his appearance at the Contra Costa Youth Summit sponsored by Supervisor Federal Glover.

“That’s too bad,” said Glover, “because he has quite a story to tell beyond his football career. He was very apologetic but I told him his family needs him at this time.”

Vernon Williams III, Chief Executive Officer of The Williams Group, a well-known advocate for youth, has volunteered to step in, said Glover.

Williams’ most effective tool when working with youth is that he used to be where many of them are at now. He was a promising high school baseball player who received a college scholarship and was drafted by the New York Yankees. However, he got involved with the wrong crowd and his life took a bad turn, leading to prison at the age of 19.

Despite his setback, he was able to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree, turn his life around, and become an effective advocate and mentor for young people throughout the Bay Area.

He recently was picked by the Ireland-based Dialogue for Peaceful Change community-building group to help communities throughout the world work out their differences to come to a consensus.

“The message Vernon brings is that the decisions people make when they are young can determine how successful they will be, how impactful they will be, as adults,” said Glover. “And … it is never too late to make the right choices.”
