Nerd Wallet: Discovery Bay Ranked in Top 20 of “Best Places for Young Families” List

This week, Nerd Wallet released its “Best Places for Young Families in Northern California” list and the Town of Discovery Bay made the top 20 out of 202 locations they analyzed.

Nerd Wallet is showing Discovery Bay with a population of 14,315 with the 2014 median home value as $386,500 with selected monthly owner costs of $2,688. The median family income was $114,085. The crime rating was listed as “most safe”.

According to Nerd Wallet, they analyzed newly released data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to assess factors like education quality and home affordability, and used Neighborhood Scout’s crime risk score to gauge safety.

The scoring breakdown and methodology includes: Home affordability was 30% of the score, Growth and Prosperity was 20%, family friendliness was 20%, educational was 30%.

  • No. 39 – Brentwood
  • No. 75 – Oakley
  • No. 169 – Concord
  • No. 174 – Pittsburg
  • No. 183 – Richmond
  • No. 186 – Antioch
  • No. 202 – Bay Point was last on entire list.

  • Oakley – Most Safe
  • Brentwood – Safe
  • Concord – Less Safe
  • Pittsburg – Less Safe
  • Bay Point – Less Safe
  • Richmond – Least Safe
  • Antioch – Least Safe

  2. Folsom
  3. San Ramon
  4. Dublin
  5. Kingsburg
  6. Roseville
  7. Rocklin
  8. Elk Grove
  9. Clovis

In April, Nerd Wallet released its worst Bay Area Commutes where East Contra Costa had 5 cities in its Top 10. The list was created after analyzing the major costs: time and money where Discovery Bay ranked No. 1 as the worst commute, followed by Brentwood, Antioch and Oakley.
