Walnut Creek – After months of negotiating and several bid clarifications later, the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, which manages solid waste and recycling for the communities of Alamo, Danville, Lamorinda, Walnut Creek and a portion of unincorporated Contra Costa County, finished its 6-hour meeting last night with an 8 to 3 vote to approve hiring Mt. Diablo Recycling as the area’s new recycling processing company.

“We are honored to be selected as Central County’s recycling company and want the Authority to know that we place the highest priority in providing excellent service to the Authorities communities,” said Joe Garaventa, CEO of Mt. Diablo Recycling, owned and operated by Mary  Garaventa and the Garaventa Family.

Three companies were vying for the recycling portion of the Authority contract.  Pacific Rim Recycling, the current recycling contractor out of Benicia, and California Waste Solutions, a company headquartered in San Jose.  Mt. Diablo Recycling was chosen for its competitive pricing, its years of recycling experience and the fact that it was a local company that hires locally and pays its employees a living wage with benefits.

“Mt. Diablo Recycling is local, we respect our employees by paying a living wage and providing benefits for their families, with many of our team members having worked for us for over 30 years,” said Jim Nejedly,  a longtime Walnut Creek resident and General Manager of Mt. Diablo Recycling.  “We will work hard to do an excellent job and want to thank the Authority for its confidence in our great community recycling programs.”

Over 35 speakers attended yesterday’s Authority meeting which was held at the Oak Hill Park Community Center in Danville.  All but two spoke to Mt. Diablo Recycling’s and the Garaventa Family’s experience and local commitment to recycling, including the fact that they are local and pay their employees well.  Representatives from Pittsburg spoke about their school district being awarded Keep America Beautiful’s Best School Recycling Education Program in the United States and attributed this to the work of Mt. Diablo Recycling who partnered with them in this great achievement.

After nearly 6 hours of presentations, speakers and deliberations, the Authority on an 8 to 3 vote at around 7:30 pm gave the nod for staff to begin negotiations on a 10-year contract with Mt. Diablo Recycling.

Who did they Pay off??? Look at their original bid on the contract. You will find it was much higher than Pacific Rim Recycling’s bid. They had insider help to buy the contract in a very under handed way.
The Board should be sued for changing the process and allowing a competitor to rebid for the contract after knowing what the bids are. Corruption!!!!!
