Arrest Made In Fatal Shooting at American Canyon Safeway
Christopher Young charged with Murder

On August 16th, 2020, at approx. 12:02 pm, a shooting occurred at the Safeway parking lot in the city of American Canyon. Unfortunately Nathan Gabriel Garza, 18 years old from Fairfield, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Nathan was a Safeway employee.

Napa County Sheriff’s Detectives in conjunction with the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force initiated an investigation. The investigation led to a vehicle of interest, possibly associated with the shooter. The vehicle was described as a white colored Cadillac sedan with a partial California license plate of “7NP” and was seen fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.

At approximately 12:30 pm, multiple reports came into Napa Dispatch regarding a Black male adult who was jumping fences and running through backyards. Napa County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives responded quickly and apprehended the suspect.

During these initial stages of the investigation, it was believed this suspect was not associated with the shooting based on witness descriptions. However, detectives did not rule out the possibility the suspect was the responsible for the shooting and identified the suspect as Christopher “Roly” Young, 23 years old, from Martinez, California.

Further investigation identified and located the white Cadillac used in the shooting parked on Cattail Drive in American Canyon. Residential surveillance video showed a male subject matching the description of Young parking and exiting the vehicle within minutes of the shooting. He then left the area on foot in the direction in which he was eventually apprehended. A subsequent search of the vehicle located a .45 caliber handgun, the same caliber handgun used in the Safeway shooting.

Additional charges of 187 PC – Murder were added to Young’s booking. He is currently in custody at NCDC. Detectives would like to talk with anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may help solve this case. Our detectives can be reached at (707)253-4591
