Man Who Dragged Pleasant Hill Officer During Traffic Stop Arrested In San Francisco After Pursuit

by ECT

On December 30, at approximately 7:50 pm, a Pleasant Hill Police Officer stopped a vehicle for a vehicle code violation. During the traffic stop,  Anthony McClain, 29 and who was the driver, provided false names and birth dates to the investigating officer. McCain refused to turn off the car and hand the keys to the officer.

According to police, during a brief struggle for the car keys, McCain accelerated quickly while the officer was still partially inside the suspect’s vehicle. The investigating officer was dragged before he was able to free himself. McClain’s vehicle collided with several objects as he fled and he was able to escape capture. The investigating officer was not injured during the assault. It was later determined McCain was on active parole with the California Department of Corrections and had multiple outstanding felony arrest warrants.

On December 31, Pleasant Hill Police investigators located and conducted surveillance on McCain’s vehicle in the city of San Pablo. At approximately 11:47 am, McCain was seen entering and driving away in the vehicle.

San Pablo Police Department marked patrol units working with the Pleasant Hill Police detectives attempted a traffic stop on McCain’s vehicle as it entered Hwy 80. McCain fled and a vehicle pursuit was initiated.

San Pablo PD patrol units pursued the vehicle to the Bay Bridge where they terminated the pursuit due to unsafe conditions. On the west side of the Bay Bridge, a California Highway Patrol unit spotted McCain’s vehicle and successfully deployed a tire deflation device to disable it. The disabled vehicle stopped on Hwy 101 at Hospital Curve in San Francisco.

McCain fled on foot down an embankment toward Potrero Avenue. Members of the CHP, San Francisco PD, and PHPD investigators searched the area for McCain. SFPD officers spotted and captured McCain on 20th Street & Potrero Avenue.

McCain was later booked into the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez on multiple charges.
