Local Law Enforcement Nets 57-Tickets Targeting Distracted Drivers

by ECT

The Brentwood Police Department announced that a joint-enforcement operation resulted in 57-tickets being issued on Wednesday in a campaign aimed at distracted driving.

According to Brentwood Police Lieutenant Sal DiMercurio, the police jurisdictions of Antioch, Brentwood and Oakley joined forces to patrol local streets in each city as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the State of California.

They spent two hours in each Antioch, Brentwood and Oakley and monitored targeted areas such as the Lone Tree corridor between Antioch and Brentwood, Delta Fair and Somersville, and Laurel Road near Laurel Elementary School as well as Neroly Road near Freedom High School.

In total, 20 tickets were given in Antioch, 19 in Brentwood, and 18 in Oakley.

Police did say that more than half of the tickets given were for drivers using their cell phone while driving and the rest were for various other moving violations.

The focus was on distracted drivers, but in some cases they picked up speeders.

According to Lt. DiMercurio, a female in her early 20’s received a ticket for driving 71-mph in a 35-mph zone on Laurel Road near Laurel Elementary School.

“Distracted driving awareness month is a statewide campaign, all agencies are taking part in increasing enforcement, educational opportunities and raising awareness,” said Lt. DiMercurio. “We saw it as a good time to pool our resources when Antioch has 1-2 motors, Brentwood has 2 motors and Oakley has 1 motor, it’s a lot easier to conduct an operation like this with that many people as opposed to do it ourselves. We have a good working relationship with other jurisdictions and worked collaboratively to increase enforcement in our respective cities.”

Law enforcement is planning another distracted driving detail towards the end of the month but released no details as to when it may occur.

How about targeting all the losers and low lives that loiter on Delta Fair and Sommersville making it one of most dangerous areas in Antioch now? How about all the homeless that have turned a busy shopping center of Delta Fair, into a encampment right in public view? How about the losers that park their stolen cars, RVS, etc in parking lots in these areas? But no they wouldn’t make money from that would they? They rather target write petty tickets and get paid!!

There's only 1 'm' in somerville. Apr 21, 2016 - 8:52 pm

Wow, does that get a galactic whatever!

REALLY??

Petty, I hardly think so, these entitled jackasses like missy doodle shit for brains doing 71 in a 35 need to lose their PRIVILEGE to drive for a while and wake up to the fact their behavior endangers lives, namely mine and every other normal person trying to live a socially responsibly 1st world life in this town.

One can easily avoid Somerville/Delta Fair and never get hurt, you can’t avoid irresponsible idiots behind the wheel.

NICE WORK APD,BPD & OPD–you guys definitely have my support!

Who cares how Somersville is spelled, it’s still a haven for crime. I agree with Mr. Jones. I think robbery, assault, assualt with deadly weapons, rape, that have all occurred in the shopping center on Delta Fair/ Somersville are a little more serious then speeding 20 year old!! One can’t just avoid that area when you live down street, and it’s the path to your home! Get it together ^

This is why traffic stops are important. Apr 24, 2016 - 7:15 am

I got it together bitch, that’s why I don’t live, work or use that area, and neither should you!

You need to wake up and realize traffic stops nab criminals everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. It’s one of law enforcements most efficient and effective tools to capture scum that belong in jail.

Studies are showing that driving with children is exponentially more distracting than texting while driving.

How about the (female) drivers that are putting on their makeup while driving to work? Or the person reading while driving? Eating while driving is another one. The list can go on and on. The officers are bringing back to our attention that a lot of people are in need of a refresher to be aware and pay attention. If they have to do it by handing out tickets, so be it! Great job to our officers!

In that case aren’t the police the most distracted drivers out there? Consider that inside every police cruiser there’s a huge array of different sized screens, buttons, switches, weapons, communications by phone, etc, that each must juggle throughout the day. We’re all “distracted” in reality.
