by ECT

On Monday, at 11:35 pm, three Contra Costa County firefighters sustained minor injuries after their Engine was struck by another vehicle.

Engine 15 was rear-ended by another vehicle on Westbound SR-24 east of Acalanes Road in Lafayette while they were on scene of another vehicle crash.

According to the District:

Engine 15 (Lafayette) had remained on scene after an earlier accident to provide a buffer for the CHP officers investigating the scene. Engine 15 was parked blocking the number four lane and right shoulder of SR24. While parked, Engine 15 was rear-ended by a mid-sized passenger vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

After being hit, Engine 15 called Dispatch, requested a response for the accident, and began to render lifesaving care to the driver of the vehicle. Medic 13 arrived on scene and assisted E15 with patient care. Battalion 1 (Pleasant Hill) arrived on scene and established IC.

Engine 16 (Lafayette) arrived on scene and BC1 placed them on patient care with Medic 13. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital by Medic 13 with two firefighter riders to assist with patient care. E15 was assessed for injuries. Engine 1 and Truck 1 (Walnut Creek) arrived on scene and took initial actions for a fuel leak from the damaged Engine 15.

HM21 was requested to assist with the fuel leak. The crew from E15 was transported to the hospital for assessment by Medic 14. The Duty Chief (1104) and Apparatus Shop Manager responded to the scene to assist with logistics and to coordinate care of the crew from Engine 15. Contra Costa Fire personnel remained on scene until 2:11 AM cleaning up the diesel spill and coordinating the towing of Engine 15.

The driver of passenger vehicle was transported with major injuries. The three firefighters from Engine 15 were treated and released from the hospital.

No other information was released.

CHP UPDATE 2 DUI CRASHES on HWY-24 at SAME LOCATION

Last night (4/6/2020) on Hwy-24 westbound at Acalanes Road, two separate crashes occurred, where both drivers were arrested for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence/Impairment. Here are the details.

At about 9:06pm, Contra Costa CHP units were advised of a collision involving a sedan into the back of a Safeway Big Rig at Hwy-24 westbound at Acalanes Road. Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, a Lexus sedan with four male occupants inside had crashed into the back of the Big Rig at a high rate of speed, causing major damage and major injuries. All three male passengers were transported to the hospital for major non-life-threatening injuries. The 22yr old driver of the Lexus, Konstantin Vodyanov from Pinole, also suffered major injuries, was transported to the hospital, and was suspected of driving under the influence. While at the hospital, Vodyanov was investigated and arrested for FELONY DUI. Due to his injuries, he was admitted to the hospital and will remain there for an unknown amount of time. The driver of the Big Rid fortunately was not injured.

Then at about 12:54am, while CHP Officers and emergency responders were still on scene for the first DUI collision, the Fire Truck with three firefighters inside that was assisting us and blocking the lanes of traffic to create a safe scene for the investigators, was rear ended by a Honda sedan that was traveling at a high rate of speed. Thankfully the firefighters only suffered minor injuries. Then they all selflessly got out of their truck and immediately started rendering aid to the unconscious solo male driver of the Honda that hit them. Suallah Hatari Lloyd, 30yrs old from Oakland, suffered major injuries, was transported to the hospital, and was also suspected of driving under the influence. While at the hospital, Lloyd was investigated and arrested for DUI. Due to his injuries, he was admitted to the hospital and will remain there for an unknown amount of time.

There is NEVER A REASON to drive impaired as DUI driving is 100% PREVENTABLE, 100% OF THE TIME. There are many responsible choices available to get home safely. Please utilize them and never drive impaired.

how do you expect someone to see a firetruck in the roadway at 11:35 pm? I’m sure the firetruck had no lights on,must have been parked there in total darkness——
