LAFAYETTE, CALIF., — Today, to address the possible spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Lafayette, Mayor Mike Anderson, in consultation with Public Safety Subcommittee Committee Liaison Councilmember Cam Burks, City Manager Niroop Srivatsa, and City management, directed that all City of Lafayette meetings, programs, classes, and events – and any other events taking place at City-owned facilities – be cancelled through March 31, 2020.
The Mayor’s action comes following an Emergency Declaration made this week by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and new guidance on public gatherings issued by Contra Costa Health Services.
Although the City is not currently aware of any cases of COVID-19 in Lafayette, the Mayor directed that steps be taken to safeguard Lafayette residents and provide efforts to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19 through City meetings and events. The health of residents and employees is the highest priority for the City of Lafayette and in taking these steps the City realizes residents and businesses will be inconvenienced. However, the situation concerning COVID-19 is unprecedented and evolving daily and the City wishes to err on the side of caution rather than put people at risk of possible exposure to the virus.
Effective immediately through March 31, 2020, the Mayor has directed that the City of Lafayette implement the following measures:
- All events at City-owned facilities, including public meetings and social, cultural, and sporting events are cancelled;
- All Parks, Trails, and Recreation programs and classes, including elementary school site enrichment classes, are cancelled effective Friday, March 13, 2020, with the exception of After School Awesome, Tot Drop, and Tiny Tots Preschool which will remain operational through Wednesday, March 18, 2020, in order to give parents time to make alternative arrangements for their children;
- All senior membership classes are cancelled, and the operation of the Spirit Van is suspended. Seniors will be offered subsidized rides through the GoGo Grandparent program.
- Protocol regarding the operation of City Offices are being put into place and will be detailed shortly;
These measures will be re-evaluated in the coming weeks as more data on the spread of COVID-19 is provided through Federal, State, and County health agencies. Prior to March 31, 2020, the City of Lafayette, based on the expected new transmission data, will make a determination to continue or suspend these measures.
