I-680 Lanes Re-open After 70-Year-Old Man Dies in Walnut Creek Motorcycle Crash

by ECT

The California Highway Patrol have re-opened lanes on Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek after a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist who was thrown from one side of the highway to another.

The crash was reported off North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 pm according to radio traffic that ejected the motorcyclist to the other side of the freeway and had to be extricated from a vehicle not involved in the initial crash.

Shortly after being taken to the hospital, CHP said the accident became a fatality.

According to the CHP Log, a SIGALERT was issued at 12:41 pm in both directions. By 1:47 pm,  Lanes 1-6 were blocked in the southbound direction while lanes 1-4 were blocked in the northbound direction.

By 2:22 pm, additional lanes were re-opened. By 3:04 pm, CHP re-opened all lanes.

Official CHP Release:

Early this afternoon, at 12:40 pm, we received a call of a traffic collision involving a motorcyclist and a sedan on I-680 northbound, south of North Main Street in Walnut Creek. The sedan made a turning movement to the left, struck the concrete center divider, and spun around back into traffic. A motorcyclist was unable to avoid colliding with the sedan as it veered towards him.

The rider, a 70-year-old Martinez man, was subsequently ejected from the motorcycle and into the southbound lanes of traffic as a result of this collision. A third vehicle collided with the sedan as it careened out-of-control.

Emergency personnel promptly arrived on scene and rendered medical aid to the motorcyclist. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where regrettably he died of his injuries.

At this time it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision and no arrests have been made. If anyone observed this incident or has any information regarding the events leading up to this collision, we ask that they please contact us at 925-646-4980.
