Homicide Suspect Who Opens Fire at Pinole Police Shot

The Pinole Police Department said Thursday that a suspect wanted in connection with a homicide was shot by police as he fled the scene.

At approximately 1:10 PM on July 8, Pinole PD dispatch received a report of a disturbance at a residence in the 1100 block of Encina Avenue involving a subject armed with a gun. While officers responded, the reporting party advised dispatch a subject had been shot and the suspect was fleeing on foot.

Police said they established a perimeter.

The suspect confronted a Pinole officer and fired multiple shots at the officer. The officer returned fire and struck the suspect. The suspect was detained and medical aid summoned. The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The officer was not hit and was not injured.

Officers searched the residence and located a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Contra Costa County Officer Involved Shooting protocol was initiated and the incident is being investigated jointly by the Pinole Police Department, Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Contra Costa DA’s office.

There is no threat to public safety. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call 510-724-1111.

FRIDAY UPDATE VIA PINOLE POLICE

  • This disturbance started as a dispute between family members.
  • After reviewing body-worn camera footage, it was determined the suspect fired one shot at the officer. The officer pursued the suspect on foot while giving commands to drop his weapon, took cover, continued to give several commands for the suspect to drop his weapon before returning fire and striking the suspect.
  • The suspect, who is related to the victim, has been identified as 25-year-old Jeramy Dorsey out of Oakland and is currently at the hospital in critical but stable condition.
