Governor Signs Bill to make Ethnic Studies a CSU Graduation Requirement

by ECT

On Monday, Ethnic Studies will now be a requirement in the California State University system after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1460. It will require ethnic studies course as a graduation requirement at the CSU system.

The bill, which was introduced by Dr. Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) advanced last Thursday in a 30-5 vote by the State Senate.

This bill, commencing with the 2020–21 2021–22 academic year, would require the California State University to provide for courses in ethnic studies at each of its campuses. The bill, commencing with the 2020–21 students graduating in the 2024–25 academic year, would require the California State University to require, as an undergraduate graduation requirement, the completion of, at minimum, one 3-unit course in ethnic studies, as specified.

Within the bill, is says ethnic studies are an interdisciplinary and comparative study of race and ethnicity with special focus on four historically defined racialized core groups: Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latina and Latino Americans.

The bill passed out of the State Assembly on August 3 in a 57-9 vote while passing the State Senate in a 30-5 vote back in June.

Crock of BS!! Aug 18, 2020 - 9:05 am

The worthless governor and more liberal BS.
Will this include information to help us understand why blacks commit more crimes than any other “ethnicity” or why blacks live in predominantly broken homes?? Or possibly why blacks feel they are owed every handout possible or feel “ reparations” are deserved despite no person alive today being directly involved in slavery??
Just curious?? LOL

It has been awhile but I believe I was required to complete at least one humanities course to graduate from college. Ethnic Studies would fall under the Humanities category. How does this law place this requirement for graduation. A stand alone requirement? Or is this hoopla for adding it to the Humanities requirement? I chose Latin Studies learning of California agricultural leaders organizing farm laborers for better working conditions. Cesar Chavez and Doloras Huerta. Did I meet the “new” Ethic Studies requirement ahead of my time?

As long as it covers ALL ethnicities. This crap is really getting out of hand. As the previous comment, We Already Have Humanities Courses !
I can’t t wait until this voting cycle is over. So much legislation waste to grandstand. It’s really out of control.

I also had to take an ethnic studies class before I went to Sacramento State in 1974. I took Mexican-American History. It was a requirement for that school. I enjoyed that class and even took another class Mexican- American Literature in the next semester. That class was not required. I think it is a great idea to learn about other cultures other than your own.

Wouldn’t you know it? It’s that ugly, fat witch from San Diego (Shirley Weber) who’s behind this crap! This is why I’m going to attend a private college so I don’t have to put up with this nonsense!
